Emma Harriet Wells1

F, b. March 1878, d. 1937
Emma Harriet Wells was born in March 1878 in Wisconsin.2,3,4

Emma Harriet Wells married Benjamin Carter, son of Ichabod Gararas Carter and Amanda S. Carter, in 1896.1,5 In the census of 14 June 1900 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, she is listed as the wife of Benjamin Carter. Her name appears as Emma H. Carter. She is 22 years old and her birth date is given as March 1878. She was born in Wisconsin and her father was born in England and her mother in New York. She has been married for five years and is the mother of two children, but only one is still living.3 In the census of May 1910 in Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota, she is listed as the wife of Benjamin Carter. Her name appears as Emma H. Carter. She is 33 years old and was born in Wisconsin. She has been married for 14 years and is the mother of 3 children. It is shown that all three children are still living. However this is probably incorrect because in the 1900 census, it showed that one of her two children was no longer living. Therefore she is probably the mother of four children and three are still living. Her fahter was born in England and her mother in the U. S.2 In the census of 6 January 1920 in Sioux Falls City, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, she is listed as the wife of Benjamin Carter. Her name appears as Emma Carter. She is 41 years old, married, and was born in Wisconsin.6 In the census of 3 April 1930 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, she is listed as the wife of Benjamin Carter. Her name appears as Emma H. Carter. She is 52 years old and was first married at the age of 17. She was born in Wisconsin, as was her mother and her father was born in England. She is working as a seamstress at a department store.7
