His mother was a noble Christian woman who trained her children to habits of industry and in the fear of God. He converted and joined the church at N. Ashford, when he was seventeen years old. In early life he evinced a strong desire to obtain an education. By teaching and self-denial he was enabled to enter Madison University, now colgate, at Hamilton, New York. in 1833, from which he graduated in 1838. He also studied theology there, finishing the course in 1840, although his health was frail during his student life.2 He was ordained. He was determined to preach the gospel in destitute portions of the West.2

Thomas Holman moved with Rudolphus Weston and William Weston in 1841 to Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois; Rudolphos, William and their families along with siblings, Phoebe and John, and John Holman (Rudolphos' brother-in-law) moved.3,4,5 In 1845, Thomas moved to Connecticut. After preaching and teaching in Illinois, he returned.6

Thomas Holman married Maria Louise Crawford, daughter of Charles Crawford, on 6 August 1846 in Connecticut.2 In 1846, Thomas moved to Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois. He preached for two years, until failing health completted him to return East. He preached at Tolland, Connecticut, for a time, then at Stafford for five years, where he was very successful and greatly beloved. He next preached at West Woodstock for two years.6 In the census of 16 August 1850 in Stafford, Tolland County, Connecticut, Thomas Holman, shown as Thomas Holman, is listed as the head of a household which included the following household member, Maria Louise Crawford.
