The Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 began over 20 years ago. The project initiated by Dorothy Riker, the late former Editor of The Hoosier Genealogist listed early county marriages in that publication. Cards with groom names were made from these indexes and placed in the Genealogy Division. Later cards with brides names were added to this core index. Through the efforts of the Genealogy Division staff, and the assistance from volunteers, cards were made for both name of bride and groom for all other counties where marriage records exist through 1850. These cards were made from information in the Genealogy Division. Original marriage records are located in the county seat where the marriage took place. The completed index cards became the Database to an Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 (Jennings County: Henry Hughes, Polly Barnes, 22 oct 1823) Source No. 189.

Hereinafter cited as Hughes and Allied Families. This book is designed to include the complete history of the descendants of Henry F. and Bardwell Hughes, and such account of the Bowen family as lay fairly within reach. Brief notices of other allied families are given. (Note by BJM: I have found several mistakes in the book.) (Page 177) Copy in possession of Barbara J. Malloure, Michigan. Source No. 223.
