James G. Terry was born before 1845.1 In 1857, James was working as a clerk for the Hon. D. H. Jerome and continued with him for about one year. He then moved to Rock Island, Illinois, and engaged in business for himself. He returned to Saginaw after an absence of one year and joined the firm of D. H. Jerome & Co and continued as a partner until the year 1867. He then severed his connection with the firm and came to East Saginaw and joined Ferry, Seely & Spencer, in the grocery business. Later on he was worked in the lumber business, which is what he was doing at the time of his death..1 In 1857, James and Caroline moved to Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan.2

The funeral services took place at his late residence on the corner of Jefferson and Fitshugh streets and were conducted by Rev. G. W. Wilson, of the Episcopal Church. The remains were taken to the train by a large group of friends and acquaintances, and conveyed to Syracsue, the residence of his mother and other friends. He left a wife, two children, and a sister, Mrs. B. F. Seeley.4
