Chauncey Cady was born circa 1800 in Connecticut.1 He was the son of Joseph Cleveland Cady and Lucy Hutchins.1

Horace and Chauneey Cady came to Michigan on the historic steamer, Walk-in-the-Water. The boat was the first steamboat on the upper Great Lakes and built for passenger service between Black Rock, New York, and Detroit. She entered service in the summer of 1818, but with her low horsepower, she was unable to buck the current on the Niagara River and had to be towed by a span of oxen from Black Rock to Buffalo. It took one whole week in getting from Buffalo to Detroit and it took 12 yoke of oxe and one span of horses to to the boat over the rapids below the mouth of Buffalo Creek. The steamer was a cross between a steamer and a sailing craft. She carried two high masts and was fitted with a square-rigged foresail. The fares between Buffalo and Detroit were $18 for cabin passengers and $7 for steerage. When full, the steamboat carried about 150 passengers. Her last season was in 1821. One evening a gale blew up and the steamboat began to leak. Eventually she grounded on the beach south of Buffalo. All the people were safely shown to shore, but she was a lost.1,2,3

Index Person - Bricker *

?
Henry Bricker: Henry Bricker along with his brother, David, enlisted in the 5th Battery of Indiana Artillery on 8 October 1861. Their first engagement was at Stone River,Tennessee where a shell fragment stuck Henry. It only knocked him down and he kept that fragment throughout the war. Stone River was a fierce battle that took place between December 31, 1862 and January 2, 1863. Although the battle was tactically indecisive, it provided a much needed boost to the North after the defeat at Fredericksburg. There were over 23,000 casualties. Henry and David were honorably discharged after serving over three years.

John Bricker: John Bricker is the first known Bricker ancestor. He was born in Germany around 1723 and left a will in Maryland dated 16 May 1777 listing his wife and seven of his children.

Henry Freeman Hughes: (3rd great-grandfather of Ella Landis, who married William Henry Bricker.) Henry was born in Wales in 1723 and was a seaman in the English navy. It was said that he deserted his ship, probably at Boston, from a dislike of the service and that when he came to East Haven, he claimed that he was a freeman, and that his name was Freeman. Some time afterwards, his brother Bodwell came and told people that his real name was Hughes.

Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink: Ernest was born 5 February 1802 in Windheim, Germany and immigrated to American on the ship Bark Republic which departed from Bremen, Germany on 1 July 1846. The ship's manifest showed Ernest as 44 years old and heading to Fort Wayne. Listed with him was his wife and children, including Sophia, just 6 months old.

William Tuttle: (7th great-grandfather of Ella Landis, who married William Henry Bricker.) He was born Northamptionshire, England in 1609 and came to Boston on the ship Planter in 1635, in the company of his wife and three small children and the Rev. John Davenport, a prominent puritan preacher. He had 12 children.

Sarah Tuttle: (6th great-grandaunt of Ella Landis, who married William Henry Bricker.) Sarah died at the hands of her brother. An article titled "What Is It with Those Tuttles?", by Sybil Smith states that Benjamin went to the barn, got an ax, returned to the house, and stuck Sarah on the head, "mauling & mashing her head to many pieces in a barbarous and blood manner." Benjamin then ran away and hid in the woods. He was hanged for murder that same year. What makes Benjamin's action even more unusual is that sister Mercy (who, the author believes, witnessed the murder of Sarah) would, fourteen years later, kill her own son Samuel by striking him on the head with an ax.
