Alvin W. Carter was born on 11 April 1858 in New York.5,2,4,6 He was the son of Ichabod Gararas Carter and Amanda S. Carter.5,1,4 In the census of 7 August 1860 in Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York, Alvin appears in the household of Ichabod Gararas Carter as Alvin W. Carter. He is two years old and was born in New York.5 In the census of 10 August 1870 in Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York, Alvin appears in the household of Ichabod Gararas Carter as Alvin W. Carter. He is 13 years old and was born in New York.7 In 1876, Alvin W. Carter moved with his parents to Delevan, Faribault County, Minnesota; They operated a farm for about three years around Delevan.8,9,10 In 1878, Alvin W. Carter moved with his parents to Dakota Territory; When they first settled in the area, there wasn't a town around them, but years later the place was called Canistota, McCook County, South Dakota.9

It is likely that Alvin filed for a land patent around 1879, when he turned 21. A land patent was recorded for him years later, on 30 June 1882, for 160 acres.11 Land patents are document that transfer government land to individuals. The land Alvin purchased was for cash, but may have had similar rules as the land patents throught the Homestead Law. The Homestead Law, provided for 160 acres of federal land to be allotted to heads of households, widows, or single persons over 21. The law was intended for those who were landless or owned less than 160 acres. The law required that the property be resided upon, built upon, and cultivated over a five-year period. When people located a desired piece of land, they filed a claim for the property chosen in person through the local land office. The final application for the certificate of patent had to be made within two years after the completion of the residency requirements, or the claim was no longer valid. Once the final certificate was received, it entitled the claimant to a patent for his homestead.

He survived the death of his mother, Amanda S. Carter, who died on 17 October 1878 in Dakota Territory.12 In the census of 7 June 1880 in Township 101, McCook County, Dakota Territory, he is listed as the son of Ichabod Gararas Carter. His name appears as Alvin W. Carter. Alvin is 22 years old and was born in New York. He was sick with dispepsy at the time of the census.13 Circa 1883, Alvin moved to Charles Mix County, South Dakota. He lived about seven miles from town, which in 1925 was known as Pratt. He lived there for about seven years before moving again.14 Circa 1890, Alvin moved to Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.14

In the census of 5 June 1900 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, Alvin W. Carter, shown as A. W. Carter, is listed as a head of household, living alone. He is 42 years old and was born in New York, as were his parents. His birthday is given as April 1858. He is working as a hay merchant and rents his home. His brother, Benjamin, is also working as a hay merchant in Sioux Falls.15

Alvin W. Carter's third wife was May Carrie Almont. They married on 3 February 1909 in Minnehaha County, South Dakota.16,17 In the census of April 1910 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, Alvin W. Carter appears as a head of household which include his wife, May Carrie Almont, his step son, Lawrence Almont, his adopted daughter, Lucile Carter . He is 52 years old, a farmer, and was born in New York. He has been married for one year and it is his second marriage. His parents birth location is shown as unknown and he owns his own home without a mortgage.18 In the census of 15 January 1920 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, Alvin W. Carter, shown as Alvin W. Carter, appears as a head of household which include his wife, May Carrie Almont, his daughter, Lucile Carter . He is 61 years old, married, and was born in New York, as were his parents. He owns his farm without a mortgage. He is working as a farmer. Also living in his household are two lodgers; Lola Clarke, age seven and Lloyd Clark, age four and ten months and an Alfred Matlock, age 52.19

On 7 May 1925 at Sioux Falls, Alvin W. Carter personally appeared before an Inspector of the Interior Department to answer questions having to do with his father's pension. Alvin stated that he was 67 years old, a retired farmer, and his residence was at 701 South Lake Avenue, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.20 In the census of April 1930 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, Alvin appears in the household of Maurice White as Alvin Carter. He is 72 years old and was born in New York, as were his parents. He was 23 years old when he was first married. Living with him is his wife, May Carter, age 60. He owns his own home and it is valued at $5000. It seems unusual that he would be showing as a household member of Maurice White, when Maurice is renting and Alvin owns his home. Perhaps it was suppose to be the other way around.21

Alvin W. Carter died in 1933.6 He is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery located in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.6

Benjamin Carter was also known as Silas Benjamin Carter.3,2,4

Benjamin Carter was born on 13 April 1861 in New York.3,2 He was the son of Ichabod Gararas Carter and Amanda S. Carter.3,2 In the census of 10 August 1870 in Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York, Benjamin appears in the household of Ichabod Gararas Carter as Silar P. Carter. He is 10 years old and was born in New York. It is assumed that this is the same person as Benjamin in the 1880 census. It is known that Ichabod had a son named Benjamin and Benjamin hasn't been located anywhere else in 1870, therefore it is assumes that in 1870 he was going by the name of Silas P. Carter. The age and birth location is correct. Perhaps the P. should have been a B. for Benjamin. His brother, Parker went to lived with his grandfather when he was just eight years old. So it is very possible that Silas was a relative and that Benjamin was also living with another relative.5 In 1876, Benjamin Carter moved with his parents to Delevan, Faribault County, Minnesota; They operated a farm for about three years around Delevan.6,7,8 In 1878, Benjamin Carter moved with his parents to Dakota Territory; When they first settled in the area, there wasn't a town around them, but years later the place was called Canistota, McCook County, South Dakota.7 In the census of 7 June 1880 in McCook County, South Dakota, Benjamin appears in the household of Ichabod Gararas Carter as Benjiman Carter. He is 19 years old, born in New York, and is living with his father and four brothers.1

Benjamin Carter married Emma Harriet Wells in 1896.9,10 In the census of 14 June 1900 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, Benjamin Carter appears as a head of household, which include his wife, Emma H. Carter, his daughter, Nellie Ruth Carter. He is 39 years old, has been married for five years, and was born in New York, April 1861. His parents were also born in New York. He is a hay dealer, as is his brother Alvin, and he is renting a house.11 In the census of May 1910 in Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota, Benjamin Carter, shown as Benjamin Carter, appears as a head of household which include his wife, Emma H. Carter, his sons, Floyd N. Carter and Grant B. Carter, his daughter, Nellie Ruth Carter . He is 49 years old and was born in New York, as were his parents. He has been married for 14 years, is working as a carpenter for a contracting company, and owns his own home, with a mortgage. He is living near his brother, Fred Carter.12 In the census of 6 January 1920 in Sioux Falls City, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, Benjamin Carter appears as a head of household which include his wife, Emma Harriet Wells, his sons, Floyd N. Carter and Grant B. Carter, his daughters, Nellie Ruth Carter . He is 55 years old, married, and was born in New York, as were his parents. He is working as a gardener.13 In the census of 3 April 1930 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, Benjamin Carter, shown as Ben Carter, appears as a head of household which include his wife, Emma H. Carter, his sons, Grant Carter . He is 69 years old and first got married at the age of 38. He was born in New York, as were his parents. He is working as a gardener in a private garden.14

Benjamin Carter died in 1954.15 He is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery located in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.15
