He taught school in a small schoolhouse on his farm, which was in Ripley Township, but as of 1888 was then in Posey township. He also taught several other schools in the area. in Ripley Township, Rush County, Indiana.12

Persons of all parties are respectfully invited to attend. Honorable criticism is solicted. Let there be a full attendance." The newspaper Jacksonian the following week stated "Drury Holt, a dyed-in-the-wool abolitionist who we are informed, got his property through the subject of 'Bible Slavery."16 In the census of June 1860 at Posey Township, Rush County, Indiana, Drury Holt, shown as Drury Holt, appears as a head of household which includes the following household members; Drury Holt, John G. He is living next to George Holt, age 36, and his household.18 In the census of 7 June 1880 at Posey Township, Rush County, Indiana, Drury Holt, shown as Drury Holt, appears as a head of household. Living with him is, his step daughter, Emizette Kendall. He is 79 year old, born in Kentucky and shown as a retired farmer. His parents were born in Virginia.19

     John H. King was born circa 1835 in Indiana.1 He was the son of Ivan King and Matilda Waldron.2 In the 1840 census in Monroe County, Indiana, John H. King is assumed to be enumerated with Ivan King.3 In the census of 1 October 1850 in Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana, John appears in the household of Ivan King as John H. King. He is 15 years old, a farmer, and was born in Indiana.4

     John H. King married Ruth Ann Bodle, daughter of Hugh Bodle and Mary Priest, on 7 March 1860 in Martin County, Indiana.5,6 In the census of 2 August 1860 at Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana, John H. King, shown as Joh H. King, appears as a head of household which includes the following household members; Ruth A. King. He is 25 years old and was born in Indiana. He is a farmer with real estate valued at $1000 and his personal estate at $130. He was married within the year and is living near Jesse King, Berry King, William King, Granville King and their households.7 John H. King is a veteran of the Civil War. Fought on the Union side.8
