Mariah Landis was born on 11 December 1821 in Preble County, Ohio.1 She was the daughter of David Landis and Mary.1 In 1835, Mariah Landis moved with her parents to Defiance County, Ohio.1 A contract was made September 29, 1838 with David Landis to carry the mail once every two weeks, afterward changed to weekly and then finally to semi-weekly. Maria Landis, the widow of Solomon DeLong and Ransom Osborn were the witnesses to the contract.2 In the 1840 census in Crane Township, Paulding County, Ohio, Mariah Landis is assumed to be enumerated with David Landis.3

Mariah Landis married Solomon Delong on 21 August 1841 in Defiance Township, Defiance County, Ohio.1

Mariah Landis died on 28 March 1912 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, at age 90.1

OBITUARY: "Mariah Landis DeLong, daughter of David and Mary Landis, was born 1821, and died in Chicago, Ill., March 28, 1912, aged 90 years, 3 months and 17 days. Moved to Defiance county, Ohio, with her parents in 1825. She was united in marriage with Solomon DeLong, August 23, 1841; and with her husband settled in DeKalb county, Indiana, in 1842. To them were born seven sons, five of whom with the husband preceded her tothe better world. When twelve years of age she was converted, andjoined the Church of the United Brethren in Christ of which she was a faithful, and honored member, until transferred to the church triumphant. Sister DeLong and her husband were charter members of the U. B. church at Newville, organized in 1850. Services were held in private dwellings until 1855, when this structure was erected. here with her family she worshiped until about 25 years ago when she removed to Hicksville and was one of three parties that contributed $700 each, in the erection of the present commodius U. B. churh of that place. Not only did she share with courage, and without complaint in the toil and privations incident to a pioneer life, but during the Civil War, husband and four sons were in the Union army; the husband ranking as colonel. With two younger sons she managed and tilled the farm, until the close of the war. She indeed was one of the loyal wives and mothers during that great conflict. But, her most prominent characteristic and othe one that lingers with all who knew her, was her devotion to Christ and the church of her choice and when opportunity and health permitted, her place was never vacant. Her testimonials were a great blessing to many and will long be remembered. It is not surprising that with such a mother, four sons enlisted in the service of their country, and that tow sons became prominent ministers of the gospel. She contributed largely to the general as well as the local interests of the church, especially to Bonebrake Theological Seminary Otterbein University and foreign missions. She was a life member and life director of the Women's Missionary Society. During the last month of her life she pieced a quilt for one of the churches in chicago. She was a woman of general and broad information, keeping abreast of the times and retained her faculties unimpaired until a few days ago, when she sufered a paralytic stroke, and regarded it as a summons from this life and seemed glad to answer the call. She leaves two sons, George DeLong of Newville, and Rev. David DeLong, D. D. of Chicago, Ill, with other relatives and a host of friends whowill not soon forget her beautiful life. Funeral services were held in the U. B. church at Newville, conducted by Rev. J. W. Lilly, assisted by Rev's Rhodes, Miller, and Grow. Interment at Newville."4

  11. Civil War Research Database. Online at www.civilwardata.com. Data unveritied. The Civil War Research Database is a relational database. This means that there are numerous files (i.e. roster records, pension index records, GAR records, etc. ) which are "related" to each other. With HDS' Database the "relationship" or connection between these multiple files is the soldier's name. These files contain information gathered from the different sources used as discussed below. Not every soldier is in every file, nor is the type of information about a soldier in a particular file the same for every other soldier in that same file. Also, the pace at which we at HDS can enter the information about each soldier will vary significantly based on the type of source documents available to us. Therefore, the Database is not a complete biographical story on each soldier, but rather a source of significant war and post war events that a soldier experienced that can be used for the study of the Civil War.
