     Jacob W. Arford was born on 31 January 1800 in Antietam Creek, Washington County, Maryland. He was of German lineage.1,4,5,6 He was the son of Frederick Arford and Cyrena Schmidth. In 1812, Jacob W. Arford moved with his parents to West Moveland County, Pennsylvania; They lived not far from Pittsburgh.

     Jacob W. Arford married first Rebecca Scott, daughter of Crawford Scott II and Mary Barnes, on 21 December 1821 in Pennsylvania.7,8,5 On 16 February 1823 their daughter, Cyrena Arford, was born. Their second child, Frederick, was born on 22 December 1824. Their third child, Crawford, was born on 21 June 1826 in Pennsylvania.9,10,11,12 Their fourth child, Robert, was born on 27 March 1828 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.13 Their fifth child, Mary, was born on 7 May 1830.

     In the 1830 census at German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Jacob W. Arford, shown as Jacob Arford, was listed as a head of a family. It is assumed that he is the free white male between the ages of 20 and 30. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household, Robert Arford and Crawford Arford, males under 5 years old, Frederick Arford, a male age 5 to 10 years old, Mary Arford, a female under 5 years old, Cyrena Arford, a female age 5 to 10 years of age, Rebecca Scott, females age 20 to 30 years old.14

     In 1831, Jacob and Rebecca moved with their family to Ohio. First they moved to Wayne County, Ohio, in the spring of 1831, and then to Tuscarawas County in 1839.5,15 Their sixth child, Elizabeth, was born on 28 April 1832 in Ohio.16 Their seventh child, John, was born on 1 December 1833 in Ohio.17,18 Their eighth child, Jacob W., was born on 13 June 1836. Their ninth child, Daniel, was born on 12 June 1839 in Ohio.19

     Jacob W. Arford's second wife was Catherine Bash, daughter of John Bash and Margaret Bloom. They married on 2 February 1843 in Ohio.5 His eleventh child, Martin B., was born on 1 January 1844 in Ohio. His twelfth child, Malissa, was born on 20 July 1845 in Ohio.22 His thirteenth child, Albert Wade, was born on 31 July 1847 in North Philadelphia, Tuscarsaw County, Ohio.23,24,5,25,26 His fourteenth child, Cintha C., was born on 8 April 1849.27 In the census of 13 November 1850 at Wayne Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, Jacob W. Arford, shown as Jacob Arford, is listed as a head of household which includes the following household members; Catharine Arford, Elizabeth Arford, John Arford, Eliza A. Arford, Margaret Arford, Daniel Arford, Malissa Arford, Albert Arford and Cintha C. Arford. He is 50 years old and was born in Indiana. He is a farmer with real estate value of $1500.2

      His fifteenth child, Franklin Bash, was born on 26 October 1851 in New Philadelphia, Tuscarasaw County, Ohio.5,28,29 In 1854, Jacob moved to Daviess County, Indiana. He purchased 160 acres of land.5 His fifteenth child, Evangeline, was born on 5 March 1855 in Indiana.30 In the census of 24 July 1860 at Madison Township, Daviess County, Indiana, Jacob W. Arford, shown as Jacob Arford, appears as a head of household which includes the following household members; Catherine Arford, Daniel Arford, William Arford, Malisa Arford, Albert Arford, Frankline Arford, Tangeline Arford and Catherine Arford. He is 60 years old, a farmer, and was born in Maryland. His real estate is valued at $3000 and his personal estate at $500.31 In the census of 10 August 1870 in Madison Township, Daviess County, Indiana, Jacob W. Arford, shown as Jacob Arford, is listed as the head of household which included the following household members; Catherine Arford, Frankline Arford, Eveline Arford and Elizabeth Denton. He is 70 years old and was born in Maryland. His property value is $3500 and personal value $600. He is working as a farmer. In his household is his family and a Elizabeth Denton, age 24, who was born in Indiana.32

      In the census of 11 June 1880 at Madison Township, Daviess County, Indiana, Jacob W. Arford, shown as Jacob Arford, appears as a head of household. Living with him is his wife, Catherine Arford, his son, Franklin B. Arford, his daughter-in-law, Jane Arford, his grandson, Albert R. Arford, and no relationship, Charles H. Stine. He is 80 years old and was born in Maryland. His father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Maryland. He is working as a farmer.33

     Jacob W. Arford died on 8 December 1884 at age 84.3,34,6 He was survived by his wife, Catherine. He is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery located in Madison Township, Daviess County, Indiana.3,6

     Rebecca Scott was also known as Rebecka Scott.3,4

     Rebecca Scott was born on 12 August 1802 in Pennsylvania.1,2 She was the daughter of Crawford Scott II and Mary Barnes.1,2 In the 1810 census in German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Rebecca Scott is assumed to be enumerated with Crawford Scott II; assumption.5 In the 1820 census in Luzerne Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Rebecca Scott is assumed to be enumerated with Crawford Scott II.6

     Rebecca Scott married Jacob W. Arford, son of Frederick Arford and Cyrena Schmidth, on 21 December 1821 in Pennsylvania.7,8,9 On 16 February 1823 their daughter, Cyrena Arford, was born. Their second child, Frederick, was born on 22 December 1824. Their third child, Crawford, was born on 21 June 1826 in Pennsylvania.10,11,12,13 Their fourth child, Robert, was born on 27 March 1828 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.14 Their fifth child, Mary, was born on 7 May 1830. In the 1830 census in German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Rebecca Scott is assumed to be enumerated with Jacob W. Arford.15

     In 1831, Jacob and Rebecca moved with their family to Ohio. First they moved to Wayne County, Ohio, in the spring of 1831, and then to Tuscarawas County in 1839.9,16 Their sixth child, Elizabeth, was born on 28 April 1832 in Ohio.17 Their seventh child, John, was born on 1 December 1833 in Ohio.18,19 Their eighth child, Jacob W., was born on 13 June 1836. Their ninth child, Daniel, was born on 12 June 1839 in Ohio.20 In the 1840 census in Wayne Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, Rebecca Scott is assumed to be enumerated with Jacob W. Arford.21 Their tenth child, William, was born on 24 June 1841 in Ohio.22

     Rebecca Scott died on 7 July 1841 in Wayne Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, at age 38.23,2,24,9 She was survived by her husband, Jacob Arford, and many of her children, including; Elizabeth, John, and Daniel.

     Robert Arford was born on 27 March 1828 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.2 He was the son of Jacob W. Arford and Rebecca Scott.2 In the 1830 census in German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Robert Arford is assumed to be enumerated with Jacob W. Arford.3 In 1831, Robert Arford moved with his parents to Ohio; First they moved to Wayne County, Ohio, in the spring of 1831, and then to Tuscarawas County in 1839.4,5 In the 1840 census in Wayne Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, Robert Arford is assumed to be enumerated with Jacob W. Arford.6

     Robert Arford married Margaret Weimer, daughter of John Weimer, on 16 June 1850.7,8 In the census of 13 November 1850 at Wayne Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, Robert Arford, shown as Robert Arford, is listed as the head of a household which includes the following household member; Margaret Weimer. He is 22 years old, a farmer, and was born in Pennsylvania.9

     In 1852, Robert and Margaret moved to Dekalb County, Indiana. Robert cleased a small patch of ground and built a log house; 26x18 feet in size and a story and a half high. They were in meager circumstances when they came to DeKalb County, and after paying for part of their land and buying a few necessary articles, they had but $12 dollars left. Robert bought seventy-five acres of land for $359, and paid $130 in cash. He went to work for others till he had paid the rest. Robert made all the furniture in his house with the exception of two chairs and a bureau.

     Robert had no team, and he and Jacob Crise bought a yoke of oxen together. Althought commencing life in what seemed adverse circumstances, Robert had toiled bravely on, assisted by Margaret, his noble wife, till they had a fine farm of nearly 200 acres, all under a good state of cultivation.2 In the census of 25 June 1860 at Stafford Township, Dekalb County, Indiana, Robert Arford, shown as Robert Arford, appears as a head of household which includes the following household members; Margaret Arford, Mary E. Arford, Mayville Arford and Charles S. Arford. He is 32 years old, a farmer, and was born in Pennsylvania.10

     Robert Arford died on 29 January 1890 at age 61.2
