  1. Indiana State Library Genealogy Division, Early American Marriages: Indiana to 1850, viewed online @ www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/indiana/genealogy/mirr.html. , (Indiana). The Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 began over 20 years ago. The project initiated by Dorothy Riker, the late former Editor of The Hoosier Genealogist listed early county marriages in that publication. Cards with groom names were made from these indexes and placed in the Genealogy Division. Later cards with brides names were added to this core index. Through the efforts of the Genealogy Division staff, and the assistance from volunteers, cards were made for both name of bride and groom for all other counties where marriage records exist through 1850. These cards were made from information in the Genealogy Division. Original marriage records are located in the county seat where the marriage took place. The completed index cards became the Database to an Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 (James Holt, Jane Crusanberry, Martin County, 24 August 1838) Source No. 189.

The completed index cards became the Database to an Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 Source No. 189.

Gamiata F. C. Malloure1

     Gamiata F. C. Malloure was also known as Geimet F. C. Malloure.2

Gamiata F. C. Malloure was born circa 1835 in France. In the census of 27 July 1860 in Henderson County, Kentucky, Gamiata appears in the household of Conrad Weining as J. S. C. Miller. It is assumed that this individual was Giemet F. C. Malloure. Giemet was seen as G. F. C. in his prison records. Also both individuals were born in France and are 25 years old. In this census, he is working as a tailor. Conrad Weining is shown as a merchant tailor and was born in Germany along with his wife. Also in this household is Otto Mattes, age 29, born in Germany and also a tailor.3

Gamiata F. C. Malloure married Zoe Alexandrine Semonin, daughter of John B. Semonin and Jane C. Bourey, on 11 June 1861 in Henderson, Henderson County, Kentucky. A marriage record is recorded for a Gamiata F. C. "Mallmore" to Zoe Semonin at Peter Semonin's house. The groom is 26 years old and the bride is 23. They are both born in France. C. T. Sandefure is shown as the Surety.4,5

His brother-in-law, Paul F. Semonin build the "Gov Powell", which ran in the trade business from New Orleans to St. Martinsville, Louisiana. Perhaps Giemet F. C. Malloure was employed by him and came to Henderson by way of New Orleans.6 On 10 January 1862 their son, Joseph C. Malloure, was born in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky; It is possible that Joseph was born in Henderson, even though his death certificate says Hopkinsville. His parents were married in Henderson and his father during the Civil War enlisted and was captured in Henderson within a year after his birth. There is no record of them ever going to Hopkinsville. Joseph was raised as a Catholic.7

Several small isolated "incidents" between Union and Confederate sympathizers in the community of Henderson are documented. Most noted, though, was the Raid on Newburgh on July 18, 1862. The raid was organized by General Adam Rankin Johnson, a resident of Henderson who is renowned for many bold acts of military strategy. Johnson's soldiers crossed the Ohio River to Newburgh, Indiana, surprising the soldiers at the arsenal there. Johnson told the soldiers that cannon guns were aim directly at them and that they should hand over all guns and ammunition. They did, never suspecting that the "cannon gun" was a mere stove pipe lying upon a couple of wagon wheels. The arms were loaded up and transported back to Kentucky.

A month after the Raid of Newburgh, Geimet enlisted in Henderson County, in the Confederate Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Kentucky 10th Cavalry. They were called the Partisan Rangers and were led by A. Johnson, the same person involved in the Raid on Newburgh.8 Geimet was captured in Henderson on 5 June 1863 and taken to Military Prison in Louisville, KY. On July 1 he was then tranfered to Johnson's Island Prison in Sandusky, Ohio. At Johnson's Island prison, a prisoner's day would begin at 6am with breakfast of coffee, bread and beef. At 7:30am roll call would start for the 13 barracks. No rank or title was recognized. The iceman and milkman would next arrive with the demand for milk exceeding the supply. Around 8am, the sutler came in with vegetables, such as onions, beets, or potatoes for the prisoners who had money to purchase. The prisoners could also purchase paper and clothes from the general store. At 10am, mail was handed out, along with the days ration and firewood. Dinner was at noon and supper was before sundown. Between these meals the prisoners usually walked around, talk, play cards, or read.9

On 1 April 1864 Geimet wishes to take allegiance and on 16 Feb 1865 he is transfered to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland. It is believed that at this point he is paroled and re-enters the war because on May 1865 he is again paroled. However this time he is shown as a Captain.

There are two types of paroles. The 1st kind occured when G. F. C. was actually in prison and released. It is believed that he then rejoined the confederate army and rose to Captain. The 2nd type of being paroled occured frequently at the beginning of the Civil War and at the end. A captured prisoner's name was taken and the prisoner was released. They promised not to enter the war until their names were exchanged between the Union and Confederate Armies. It is believed that Geimet's name was given to the Union Army at the end of the war, but he was not actually taken prisoner. He was paroled the 2nd time as a Captain and was no longer a Lieutenant. The confederate records show him as G. T. C. Mallure and a G. F. C. Mallum. There is one record where Malloure is spelled out very clearly and his first name looks more like Geimet and clearly not Gaimata. From June 1863 to Feb 1864 his name is found in several ledger books at the Johnson's Island prison receiving small amounts of money. It is not known if he received the money from outside sources or from working within the prison.9

Gamiata F. C. Malloure died circa 1865. It has been passed down from generation to generation that he died in a war. The Civil War records indicate that he was paroled May 1865, therefore it is assumed that he did not survive the trip home.

     G. F. C. Malloure is patrol on 5 May 1965. He entered prison as a Lieutenant and left as a Captain. During the Civil War, there were two types of Paroles. At the beginning of the Civil War, if you were fighting a battle and captured a man from the other side, frequently, he would sign a parole of honor that he would not take up arms again until he was "exchanged." The prisoners name was then sent to higher ups and Federal and Confederate authorities would "exchange" men that they had captured in this way. After one was properly "exchanged" he could fight again. Later, U. S. Grant realized that the U. S. had more available men to fight the war and he put a stop to the practice of paroles. A prisoner was then sent to prison and hled indefinitely. Late in the war, when the U. S. victory was clear, they started the practice again because so many were dying in the prison from disease. The other type of parole meant to release someone from prison and send them for exchange, usually at City, Point, Virginia. Gamiata Malloure, was paraoled from Point Lookout on 16 Feb 1965. He was probably sent to City Point, Virginia for exchange a day or two later and was back in the fight. It was during this time that Gamiata Malloure attained the rank of Captain. At the end of the war, Gen. Lee surrendered his army to Gen. Grant and his men were paroled (the first kin). There was no official peace treaty saying the war was over and the U. S. won. It was possible that the Gen. Lee's men could have been "exchanged" and kept on fighting.Gamiata Malloure surrendered himself to Federal authorities at Charleston, West Virginia on 5 May 1965 and was paroled.11
